Good takeout barbecue. We got the tailgate pack which was delicious. Comes with 2 large bottles of sauce. Ribs were tender and meaty. Pulled pork was moist and flavorful. Comes with 2 sides. Check out daily specials.

Pretty sure this was one of my very first reviews a long time ago, not sure why it's still not up there. Anyway, it's just like the Melvin's on James Island. Everything is covered with mustard based goodness. They smoke their meat, you can smell it in the early part of the day, it's phenomenal. I wish they'd bottle up that smell, and make a candle out of it. The Onion rings are like a doughnut with a huge slice of onion in it. If you get a basket, you better be hungry, they give a lot of fries, a onion ring, sandwich, and a drink. Can be pricey, but it's totally worth it.

Melvin's has the most delicious mustard based sauce on the BBQ AND the best hamburgers too !! Have been going here for so many years and it ALWAYS has terrific food and very fast service at the counter in ordering !!

I love this place! Love the BBQ here! Its taste is the best of all! I often take my little brother to this place. Love seeing him enjoying the meal.

This was our first here, the ribs are fall off the bone good. Large portions. Nice atmosphere.

Let me start off by saying not only will I be back again and again, but I will recommend Melvin's without hesitation or fear of anyone being let down by what Melvin's has to offer. I moved to Charleston about 15 years ago. My family and I have been frequenting Melvin's BBQ ever since due to the fact of their consistency and great food. I always want to try the rest of the menu when I go but often find myself back and forth between the 1/4 lb jalapeño bacon cheese burger and the Big Joe BBQ sandwich basket always accompanied by a chocolate milk shake because I have no will power to ever turn down the shake. The burger is delicious. That's all I can really say. The secret BBQ golden sauce, habanero and old hickory red sauce are all amazing depends on which one you are in the mood for. Basket combos are served with steak fries and a giant fried onion. TL;DR (sum it all up) Amazing bacon cheese burgers Best BBQ in South Carolina All trimmings are great. Really enjoy the hash and rice. Great southern food GO!

Went here with my parents a couple weeks ago. It was awesome. The food was great (especially with all the sauces) and the atmosphere is cool too. The people that worked there were friendly and helpful. I definitely plan on going back.

Amazing plate of BBQ!! I ordered the pulled pork plate which came with a side and some cornbread. Pulled pork was excellent! I had okra which was crispy and tasty but the cornbread (which is sweet) is where the money is! Save it for "dessert!" All that with a cup of sweet tea, and it definitely made my Monday! Melvin's is where it's at y'all!

  • Michael M.

Wow! Perhaps the best southern food I've ever had. Tried half rack of wet and dry ribs. Absolutely delicious to the very last bite. Had a side of golden onion rings and baked beans too! They were really good. Definitely coming back soon!

  • Eddy D.

This is absolutely the best lowcountry style barbecue you will find. A traditional sweet and slightly tangy mustard sauce is definitely worth a try. My all time favorite pulled pork sandwich. The meals also come with a fabulous and enormous onion ring.

  • Deborah R.

never tried this place, but will stick with "sticky fingers" the next time,.....counter staff was not very helpful in explaining choices...and said she had not tasted much of it....needless to say....nothing more to say....

  • Michael C.

OK but not great and certainly not up to Bessingers' standards. Pulled pork sandwich inadequately sauced. Limited seating. Employees occupying a table while patrons visibly searched for a table! Patrons had to wipe crud off the tables. I have to wonder where their customer satisfaction standards begin.

Melvins is one of the best BBQ here in SC. I have tried many of them and this one sticks out the most! Love it! Great sauce!

  • Jill B.

Fantastic BBQ!!!!! I love that they had the Ten Commandments on the wall and the cups!!! The sauce is mustard based and I don't like mustard but this was YUMMY!!!! I highly recommend!

  • Patti B.

I want to like this place. I've been here 3 times, but none of the times have I been overwhelmed with love for their food. However, they are much better than other bbq places that I USED to like (that have now changed recipes or something and now I hate them and won't return). I found it difficult to sit in the booths as they are meant for children or very skinny people. The major turn off was the Palmetto bug aka roach, running across the fireplace. At least they tried to find it soon as I told them about it.

Very good BBQ joint. I am a fan of mustard based BBQ sauces so whenever I go, I tend to lean towards their 'Secret Sauce'. The ribs are one of the main attractions at this joint. They can be hit or miss, but when you get a good slab, they are excellent. The ribs can be quite tender and the mustard sauce adds just the right flavor to the ribs. The sides are all pretty good. Two of my favorites are the apples and the macaroni and cheese.

Great BBQ. Their brisket is amazing. Have had Melvin's a few times now and have never been disatisfied.

    (4)
  • Marc J.

I found their food to be mediocre. The bbq sauce iz not your typical bbq sauce, and is not my style. They have a mustard based one or a hot one...neither were great. I did really like the collared greens and would recommend this side. What really irked me about this place was the fundamental christianity that was shoved in my face. I do not think it is appropriate for a restaurant to print the Ten Commandments on their cups. As an atheist, I found this extremely offensive.

What a pleasant surprise! Building was small, ordering at counter was unexpected. Food was ah-may-zing!!! Chopped pork was outstanding, with a nicely spiced, smoked flavor. Baked beans were superb, some of the best I've had -- the chunks of meat they were cooked with put this one over the top for me. Mac & cheese was cheesy but not greasy, collards were well seasoned & clean. Sweet tea was perfectly sweetened -- not too much, not too little. As a fan of eastern NC BBQ, wasn't sure I'd like the mustard sauce, but the tangy touch was great on the chopped sandwich. Will definitely be back next time we're in the area!

Went here after checking out the reviews here and being referred by a friend. I ended up getting a half rack and a bunch of sides. I gotta say, the sides were really good(the cornbread was great), but I wasn't really impressed with the ribs. The sauce and the rub on them were delicious, but the meat wasn't fall off the bone tender. Everyone else in my party agreed. I'm not sure if it was just not up to snuff that day or what. I'll be coming back again however, to try out their hamburgers (Emeril Lagasse voted them Best Hamburger in America) and see if their ribs are still the same.

Put More Pork On Your Fork I know it may sound sacrilegious living in the south, but I am not a BBQ fan. I like it on occasion, but I would not go out of my way for it. My husband, on the other hand, really enjoys it, so off to Melvin's BBQ we went. Plus... we had just heard that Emeril had voted Melvin's cheeseburger the best in America, so that alone piqued my interest. The restaurant is very simple, seats about 35-40 and has a drive thru window. The service style is one where you get in the 'cue' to get some 'Que', very similar to fast food, with slow cookin'. The gentleman that took our order seemed bored and uninterested. But that was ok, based on the aroma in the building we thought we had come to the right place!! There is a very large condiment bar with the usual plastic cutlery, napkins, salt, pepper, etc. There are also several peppers - jalapenos, etc., left out for your selection. I didn't know how long they had been there, but they seemed to have seen better days and we avoided them. After you place your order you are given a number and when called, you pick up your dinner; very simple. Our dinner came to just under $30.00. We ordered the BBQ ribs and pulled pork, "wet", with two "trimmings", and a cheeseburger. As an add-on we chose the fried Okra for $1.87. As we waited for our meal the restaurant began to fill up. I was surprised by the varied group of people - older, younger, families with children, a lot of take-out orders and a lady in a mink. The tables stocked with things to help you enjoy your meal - a roll of paper towels and many varieties of hot sauce. Before we knew it our number was called and our food was ready. The amount of food that we received was immense (see photo). I was very disappointed though that our food was served on Styrofoam plates and bowls. It downgraded the experience considerably. Even more disappointing was that the entrees themselves were tepid at best. Our sides of fries, collards, baked beans and okra were hot, but the main event was not. Quite tasty was the large onion ring garnish which we were later to find out was hand battered just like they did when they started in 1939, something you don't see too often. The "best cheeseburger in America" was just lukewarm, but still delicious. As I requested, the burger was garnished with mustard, relish and ketchup. The 4+ inch burger was served on an oversized roll and get this... the mustard and relish was on the bottom of the bun and the ketchup on the top. I'm not sure why they did it that way, but it was very good. The "Que" could have easily been a 10 had it not been close to cold, as was the restaurant's temperature - please... turn up the heat on many fronts. In hindsight I should have sent my burger back to be served correctly. As we were leaving we noticed that the drive thru window had a line of cars around the building. "Que" on wheels must be big here. After eating there, who wouldn't want to put more "pork on your fork"?

We stopped here on the way home from the children's museum and the food was ok. It was not bad but it was really nothing that made me want to go back next time we are in Charleston. The employees were nice and friendly and the restaurant was clean. We did get a bottle of the BBQ sauce and that was pretty good. I would give it a shot if you are in the area it just was not for us.

  • Tricia M.

Horrible!!! Staff phoning it in. Brisket tough, hot-sides cold as ice.

Good BBQ! Not so hip on standing to place order and having to fetch it. Don't like eating off of disposable eating ware. Still...good eats and sauces.

A must have every time we are in chucktown visiting fam. Love their onion rings (which are the size of donuts)

    (4)
  • Nancy B.

Love love loved it! This is a casual - order at the counter and they'll call your number kind of place. I had the beef brisket - juicy, tender, flavorful. My husband had the pork and also enjoyed it. Portions are plentiful and staff was very helpful and patient with us. It felt like we took forever to order b/c there were so many great options to choose from!

I'm a huge fan of Melvin's- we stayed in Mt. Pleasant while on vacation and ended up eating her twice in 5 days we were in town. The slawdog was my favorite thing I've eaten here, and the milkshakes were incredibly good. I tried the ribs dry & added sauce later- I'm definitely a fan of the ribs & I like both bbq sauces they have. The pulled pork was very good and the chicken was good as well. I was a big fan of the onion rings and the country hash over rice. The key lime pie and banana pudding are both definitely worth checking out. The food is very reasonably priced, and the portions are very generous- you can get a huge sampler platter that's definitely enough for two people (1/2 rack ribs, 1/2 lb pulled pork, 1/2 chicken) for $25. The staff were all extremely friendly while we were here, it was a great experience both times.

The rating of "As good as it gets!" is by definition a rarity... But Melvin's BBQ is that. My wife and I live in the general area known for Lexington-style BBQ and as we travel around the Southeast we love to try different types of BBQ . Before Melvin's, we thought that the nation's best BBQ was found in east Texas. But after sampling their BBQ combos - Melvin's BBQ moves to the top. A great discovery and really AS GOOD AS IT GETS! Worth a day trip to Mount Pleasant.

A great eating experience for a very competitive price. The BBQ is some of the best I've had, and the onion rings are truly 1 of a kind.

Love this place. BBQ is great... My favorite is the Little Joe.

Best french fries east of the cooper hands down! My favorite is the Big Joe Basket with an onion ring.

  • Michael W.

This was my all time favorite stop on my trip. Being from KC I was worried about comparing BBQ from other areas... KC you have something to worry about. Melvins was hot, tasty, tender, smokey and the sides ROCK. I was pointed to this place by a local Yelper and I am glad I went. My son who is in the Navy out there is going to start dragging his buddies there... it' that good!

I like everything about Melvin's BBQ, just not the food. The staff is great, the location(s) inside and out are cute, in a southern living, log cabin way. The menu has a lot to offer from plates of pork and chicken to sandwiches, salads and a very nice kids menu. I ate there based on a recommendation from a friend, a native to the area and a bit of a foodie. Here I'm thinking great premeal thoughts, but sadly I wasn't blown away as he framed my experience to be, actually, I didn't really enjoy it that much (Big Joe(( part 1). So later that week, I went again, then again and then again, looking to enjoy the flow of flavors in the BBQ meat I chose that time. FYI: I dont go once to an eatery and bash it if its not up to my expectations, I use the number 3 as my maximum tries, before I stop going. Chef's get sick, people have off nights, I get that. Now I've changed my strategy to y thinking, to eating enough from the menu, in an effort to find something I really liked. It just didn't happen. The flagship items Big Joe and Little Joe's are just average to my taste, as I am not a huge mustard based BBQ fan. That's actually not completely iron clad, I did enjoy the heck out of a mustard based BBQ from,,,Milton Place, if my memory serves me. I tried many sandwiches outside of the Joe's, yet to my personal disappointment, I cant find a sandwich that I would crave, if not consumed in a period of time. As in "Gee Whiz, you know what I could really go for now?" Honestly, even when I am hungry and in the area of, I just cant get myself to do it, yet the place is Slammed with customers, quite regularly. I am always satisfied with the portions, but it doesn't matter if whats on the plate is not to one's liking. Fried Okra, just is not my thing, the onion ring looks like a batteredup donut, its all batter and a cut of slimy onion underneath. I know this is heracy, living in the South now but I cant stand corn bread. I mean, whats the fascination with it? I dont get it. Do not let my recommendation dampen your spirits about going to Melvin's, after all (although I eat a lot) I'm just one guy, with 1 opinion.

I came here based on the recommendations of fellow Yelpers and boy did it lived up to the reviews. I ordered the Triple (something) combo. Pulled pork, half rack and chicken. Holy smokes is that a lot of food! The dry rub was good and not to overpowering. The sauce they had at the table both tastes the same though. I'd defiantly go back there again!

    (4)
  • Jennifer B.

Have you ever heard of a BBQ place being out of BBQ sauce? Well, it happened to me. Went through the drive-thru and they told me that they didn't have any red BBQ sauce left, and that I could only have the yellow sauce. Got home and they forgot to put any sauce in the bag. Wondered why you only get one onion ring, until I saw the size of it. It's more of a doughnut with a small onion on the inside. Yuck! I was foolish to think I could get good BBQ outside of the Austin city limits!

Great mustard base BBQ. Love there Big Joe Basket. Friendly employees and great service. Would suggest to anyone looking for good BBQ.

Unfortunately my first dip into Carolina style BBQ was a complete let down. When we stopped at Melvin's on a Saturday night, they were out of ribs. Boo! So we ended up having an extra portion of the BBQ pork. I was shocked to see that there was no sauce on our pork, but instead we were handed a jar of yellow BBQ sauce like you get off the shelf in a grocery store. I know nothing of Carolina BBQ, but I was a bit shocked that restaurant can't even be bothered to apply the sauce. The corn bread was pretty good but the other sides were mediocre at best. I would never return to this place.

We were down in Charleston on Vacation. We played a round of golf over @ Charleston national golf course and were looking for some lunch afterwards. I goggled BBQ restaurants and this one was close by. We could not have been happier with our decision to stop in to Melvin's BBQ. It was everything I remembered about southern BBQ. I had a large pulled pork on a bun with slaw, beans and sweet tea. It was fantastic.

    (5)
  • Chris F.

One word: Outstanding! Plain ol' Southern BBQ with great sides and Sweet Tea. We just stumbled across this place and we went back again on our vacation.

  • Michael S.

I was looking forward to having some Carolina BBQ so I could compare it to the Texas BBQ that I had several months ago but I was not able to seek out the best of the area because of my travel situation. I had to settle for what was described as the best BBQ in the area for the last 10 years (as voted by who?). Well it is not bad, but it is not great. The pork sandwich was fairly good. the meat was well cooked and tasty but the sauce was too sweet and the bun was right off the shelf of Piggley Wiggley. The cole slaw was pretty good and the pickle bar was great. The even had two different root beers, one in a bottle and one in the fountain. Overall not bad.

Good grief, this was awful. I'm having trouble reconciling our experience at Melvin's with all of these other glowing reviews. Definitely won't be going back to Melvin's. The way it works at Melvin's is, you go up to the counter to order, then wait for your number to be called, then go pick up your order at the window. Now, nine of us went there to eat one Tuesday night, and our orders were split across three different tickets. It took an unusually long time to get our food, and they managed to get something wrong (e.g. the wrong side order) on every ticket. When we went back up to the counter to try to get the problems corrected, it was like pulling teeth trying to get someone's attention, and when you finally did they were unapologetic about the mistakes. For the drinks, they were out of regular-sized cups and only had these tiny little styrofoam cups. It's still unclear to me why someone couldn't run over to the grocery store (yes, there's a big one right across the parking lot) and pick up some cups. And then there's the food. I had a pulled BBQ chicken plate. The chicken was really just awful. Someone else at my table had ribs and I think there were a little better, but not great. Melvin's proudly displays a sign stating that Emeril Lagasse named their cheeseburger #1 in the state (or world, or whatever). Maybe that should have been a clue, that the best Emeril could say about this barbecue restaurant was that they made a good cheeseburger.

    (1)
  • Stacey T.

Definitely worth a stop! Probably the best barbecue I'd had in a long time. Normally I like sweet barbecue sauce, but I loved the mustard based sauce that was their standard. Generous portion sizes, great place for lunch or dinner!

  • Jonathan V.

Had a "blue plate" special for lunch. Chopped bbq was excellent. BBQ beans were also great. Slaw was okay. Different bottles of sauces on the table were also great. We go to Melvin's every time we visit Charleston.

Came here on a visit to Charleston when we couldnt find any affordable seafood. Found great reviews on Yelp so decided to give it a try. Definitely a good decision. My wife and I got something called the Killer Trio I think. Came with a half chicken, half rack of ribs, and 8 oz of pork, plus bread and two sides. All in all, certainly acceptable 'cue, especially for what appears to be a chain restaurant. Pork was delicious. Ribs were a little fatty, but the dry rub was awesome. Paid $24 for all of that plus two drinks. Overall, its great if you need a quick bite on a budget. You won't find any better from a chain.

Ok. YUM. We absolutely loved the food here! We love bbq but tend to be unlucky in finding the good stuff. Not this time! I love how they have a drive through as well. Everything was really flavorful and the meat practically melts in your mouth because it is perfectly cooked!

  • Kyle E.

New favorite is the cheeseburger, Emeril says its the best in the country. Best barbaque in Mount Pleasant. Whatever you do get an onion ring, they are huge. Good lunch deals. Great pulled pork sandwiches, little joe basket is the best.

Avoid the onion ring! It's a heart-attack waiting to happen! Aside from that, they've got the best steak fries around at Melvin's and the BBQ ... well, ignore me and get straight in your car and go there and try it for yourself...you'll not be disappointed. I've had the pulled pork, the ribs, the beef brisket, and usually pair my entree with a side of steak fries and a side of hash & rice. WOW. Good stuff...and located so close to such a healthy place as Whole Foods Market - oh the irony! The food is pretty good, even if a little heavy. I've not had anything that I'd want to "return to sender'" yet. For "lighter" BBQ (as if there is such a thing), you may want to check out Firey Ron's Home Team BBQ...it's not bad either.

  • Eva S.

What a great little bbq place. The pork was phenomenal and the bbq chicken was excellent as well. Both had full of flavor and juicy. I would have liked to have tried the baked beans but my fiance ate the whole thing before I even realized it because they were just that good! The onion rings are basically fried dough with some onion hidden inside, just one will fill you up. The ribs were pretty dry an tough to get off the bone which was surprising given how great everything else was. Overall we loved this place, we went back to grab a sandwich later on but apparently they are closed on Sundays.

Best BANG for your buck meal in Mt. Pleasant!!! Some of the best BBQ on the planet Mouth watering BBQ and burgers. The chopped/pulled pork is delish. Jalapeno Cheeseburger was juicy, but not greasy. One of thebest burgers I've ever had. Fried Okra very good. Ambience is casual and you'll find an interesting mix of customers there.

Melvins has great South Carolina Style BBQ. A Short 5 Minute trip over the bridge from Downtown Charleston. Carolina Hash is delicious. And everything we tried on the menu from the pulled pork to ribs made it worth the trip.

Food was very authentic but service was very slow. Visited on a Friday afternoon and had to wait an eternity for our meals. BBQ pork and chicken were good but onion rings were soggy and burger was cold and flavorless.

  • Steve W.

Very tasty. I had the pulled pork and my wife had the chicken sandwich. I actually had some of hers too. Very tasty. Not a real strong vinegar taste in the mustard bbq sauce (pork) like I was expecting, but it was still pleasant. My daughter likes the 10 foot long hot dogs they have.

Best ribs in the Charleston area. If you don't love Melvin's, you do not like BBQ. (Mt. Pleasant location)

Melvin's is a must-stop when visiting Charleston. Each time my husband and I visit we make it a priority to work in a stop to this genuine BBQ establishment (at least one that is). You can smell the smoky meat as you pull into the parking lot! The ribs, pork, and chicken are all outstanding and with a variety of sauces you can't go wrong (the mustard based is our favorite!). The sides are tasty and full of flavor, especially the macaroni and cheese and the baked beans. When ordering takeout, it pays to get a few different tubs of the sides so that the family can sample them all. Another great feature of this place is the rack of bottled sauces which can be purchased. We have done this many times, and have also ordered the gift set and sent it to another BBQ loving friend from DC. Bottom line: This family restaurant offers eat in, drive through, or pick up of fabulous southern BBQ. Don't forget the sweet tea! This review is the subjective

Finally ate here the other night and other than the creepy pig walking around, everything was great. We all had pork sandwiches with a variety of sides and were impressed with the taste and the price. A quick and delicious meal, will def return.

We went there at the recommendation of Emeril Lagasse. He said it was the best burger he ever ate. Well, he must never have eaten at 5 Guys! It was just OK. I make better burgers at home. And the onion ring was disgusting. So much dough, yuck.. Very disappointing.

My first experience with mustard-based BBQ was a memorable one. Melvin's has two locations - one in Mt. Pleasant right as you come over the bridge from downtown, and one on your way out to Folly. Stop in - I repeat, stop in! The meat is so tender and juicy, and their mustard sauces are more "golden" - they are sweet with a little bite. Not like mustard you would get out of a french's bottle. The ribs are absolutely fabulous, too. Tender, smoky, and moist. Hash is outstanding, Onion rings are almost like a desert, and the collards... oh the collards. I used to hate them as a kid, but I didn't get them with all the pork butt, red pepper, and a touch of sugar. You'll smack your momma twice. Once for them being so good you have to smack someone and the 2nd for holding out on you with the collards you had to eat as a kid. Prices are excellent, and the service is outstanding. Everybody is so darn nice and helpful, you'll want to come back every day. It looked "touristy" (sp?) so I didn't stop there for about a year after I moved here. Don't make my mistake. Go to Melvin's for lunch on your first day in town. If I'm wrong, you can smack me instead of your momma.

Melvin's is the only place for me. Love the mustard base sauce, usually buy a few bottles for friends and when I grill at the house. I always get the Big Joe basket, which comes with home style fries and a big onion ring. They also have the best burgers. Everything on the menu is very good and tasty. Portions are more than enough. Also awesome sweet tea.

  • Jordan S.

This is really delicious food. The restaurant is semi-fast food, and even has a drive-thru. However, there are two large dining rooms inside with ample seating. Melvin's produces a burger that was deemed best in the U.S. by Emeril Lagassee. It's a gourmet burger, and a thing of beauty: 1/3 pound on a large bun with all of the fixins. It was quite delicious. Most menu items come as a combo or basket. The combo includes a side item, while the basket includes a side and an enormous deep fried onion ring. The onion ring is the size of a donut, and quite tasty.

It was fine. Anthony had hushpuppies, and I had mac n cheese, and cornbread and a 3oz brisket (lunch special) with BBQ sauce, which was GOOD bbq sauce. We drove thru, it was cheap, it was relatively quick (with the exception of the hushpuppies, which we had to wait for at the curb, but were given 2 extras for the trouble). I see now that they are on restaurant.com so will definitely be back next time in the area.

Being from Maryland, I'm no BBQ expert. However, I can say I enjoyed this restaurant enough that I went twice in the same week while on vacation. Loved the pulled pork -- the platter, not the sandwich, because it was juicy and tender. Bonus was that it's one of the weeknight dinner specials so you can save some cash. My favorite trimmings were the cornbread, fried okra, and mac & cheese. For those unable to get out of the car, there's also a drive-thru station for your convenience. For dine-in customers, the assorted peppers bar for dine-in customers was a nice add-on but our kind hostess let us take a few pieces home with us. I'll be back, Melvin's!

Best Bbq in Charleston. Hands down better than momma browns and sticky fingers. The BBQ sandiches are large and some of the best I've ever had. The sauce is a ketchup/mustard/honey base it seems. When you order the combo you not only get your fries(or other side) but you get a gigantic homemade onion ring-very neat. I've tasted their "best cheeseburger in the world" and it's good but I'd leave that for the kiddos. You can get a better(and bigger) burger elsewhere. I've had tradional southern BBQ, st Louis BBQ, Memphis BBQ and Texas BBQ-Melvins is the winner.

Where can i even start with Melvin's BBQ? Well, first... I am spoiled rotten by having the privilege of eating such wonderful bbq. I have been to just about every place in and around Charleston (Jim and Nick's, Sticky Fingers, Sweatman's, bobby Q's...) and Melvin's reigns supreme. Why? 1. the quality is great. Their pulled pork practically melts in your mouth and bursts with flavor. Their ribs are to die for as well and fall right off the bone. 2. The sauces. The sauce of choice is the Golden Secret Recipe which is a mustard based mix of all their sauces and is tangy and absolutely delicious. I am not a big fan of mustard based anything, yet i cannot pass this up. 3. The trimmings. Their lima beans. the best. Mac and Cheese. To die for. Hash and rice. Unbelievable. Anything you get is out of control. and their cornbread? Probably the best i've ever had. 4. the service. A few times they have screwed up my order. Ive gone up to tell them and they have literally refunded my money and given me the order on the house. Wow! Who does that? I'm a loyal Melvins customer for life. 5. If thats not enough, Emril Legasse says their burgers are the best in the country. I dont even sway that far the BBQ is so good, but i know they are delicious too. 6. Milkshakes The perfect meal? : Blue plate special (bbq pulled pork and ribs combo) 2 sides: Mac and Cheese, Baked beans. Cornbread All for 8.50. My mouth is watering just from thinking about it Note: Melvins is not open on Sundays (Very religious family who owns it)

great chopped pork sandwich, i had the slaw added to it. yummy. so good i got another one to go for later. says six ounces, but felt much heavier. only went the one time, so cant comment on the other items on the menu, but if i was in the area, I would defiantly try more.

The best burgers. The best pulled pork. The best onion ring. :You only need one ring. Ribs are fantastic, but they need to not charge so much. F'em on that. If you want to truly enjoy, get a smoked ham or turkey, when available. We are so lucky to live close by. Emeril doesn't say they have the Best burger in the country, just for yuks. It is pretty dang good.

Every time we go to Melvin's we do ribs and briskets! Both are my favorite and I refuse to give anything else a try. My fiancé and I usually share the entrees and generally choose Mac & Cheese, green beans and fried okra as our sides. Melvin's also has the best cornbread and sweet tea in town. Hands down. Would give five stars but I don't always feel the FOH staff are always nice and personable.

It is hard for me to write this review. I've patronized Melvin's in Mt. P for over a decade on and off. My last trip was the proverbial "last straw". The quality and portion size has gone so downhill over the years that I simply can not justify going there any further. I came in for lunch recently on a weekday. The drive thru line was full and the inside area was heavily populated. They take the orders at the counter fairly quickly, although there was a "What the hell do you want?" feel to the process. Ordered a two meat combo (turkey and pulled pork) with slaw and potato salad. $18 bucks, which is just about what it would cost at Home Team BBQ, so this better be good. Sigh... First off, for 18 bucks the portions are downright paltry. 2 small slices of turkey. It came out as a pile, but it was one whole slice with a few portions put together to make it look bigger. The taste was alright, the spice on the outside wasn't very potent. The portion wasn't dry, but it wasn't overly juicy as well. The pork was very disappointing. Multiple, large pieces of gristle, and it was pretty dry. It is impossible to expect fresh pull from a place like this, but there was no effort to conceal the heat lamp. The red sauce makes the pork a little passable. The sides are a disaster. The coleslaw tastes like it was made with cola. There is no tart element in it at all. The potato salad is a 50/50 mix of potatoes and mayo. The cornbread was the best part (at least it was included). The watermelon slice is a nice touch, but too little, too late. It's too bad, I used to love this place because of the price point and value (quantity and quality). Now with all the new joint popping up (Lewis in downtown, the 3 Home Team's, etc.), it just isn't worth it to fight over the bridge to get here.

Outstanding BBQ and sides. This was my first time here and I had ribs and my son had bbq pork. Both were amazing. Sweet potatoe soufle was great and beans were pretty good. A little pricey but worth it.

Salt and pepper pork belly, burnt ends (exemplary) and brisket. Good bark, good dry rub. I liked the yellow Golden Secret bbq sauce, it's a good counterpoint to the rich meat. Friendly folks too.

We have been eating at Melvin's in Mt. Pleasant for at least 28 years. This was the worse experience we have ever had. First we had to wait 30 minutes for our food which we usually have our food in about 10 minutes. My husband order the half BBQ chicken that cost $13.00 and the chicken was so dry he could barely eat it, he finally gave up and did not finish the chicken. The sides were not quite as good as they usually are either. Some of the fries that I got with my sandwich were half raw as well. There were no comment cards on the table either, so I asked if I could have a comment card and the manager led me to this site. There were other customers in the restaurant that were complaining about the wait as well. We dined here on 9/15/15 at around 7:00.

DELICIOUS!!! Don't miss their signature onion rings....they are battered in yummy goodness and you can order 2 as a side. I also had the burnt ends (seasoned perfectly and VERY tender) and the smoked turkey. Loved both mustard-based BBQ sauces.....I enjoyed it and hope to visit often when I am in the area.

We ordered to go from this place and I'm so glad we got to experience it! The food is SO good! I ordered the salt and pepper brisket with side of sweet potato soufle and fried okra and my husband ordered the half chicken with mac and cheese and green beans. All I can say is WOW! I loved the brisket! So moist and tender. I will definitely have to try this place again when I come back to Charleston. It's a shame that I'm thinking about it now as I write this review and I'm missing it so much. Also, the staff were very friendly and helpful. I ended up waiting a little longer because they were extremely busy but the staff apologized profusely and gave me free brownies. So this is definitely a restaurant to go to while in Mt. Pleasant.

Very good bbq for when you're in a pinch for time (or not). The condiments they offer for your bbq delicacies are endless and you won't leave here without a full belly. I love their pulled pork sandwich with the mustard-based sauce and their baked beans and cole slaw. Next on the list for me to try is their fried pickle spears - as if pickles couldn't get any better! You won't be disappointed if you choose Melvin's.

The best SC BBQ in Charleston! I have been a regular here since I was a cadet in the 80's. The menu has all the usual BBQ favorites, pulled pork, beef ribs, chicken and even brisket. I just love the smokey tender pulled pork, and the sweet mustard sauce is perfect. We usually go for the pulled pork tray/platter as they come with 2 sides. Now these aren't just some small side, expect delicious steak fries, large onion rings, baked beans, coleslaw, and many more to fill you. Plus you get a piece of their soft as cake cornbread. Besides the fantastic BBQ they also have nice large burgers, which were better than some other well known burger establishments. I fully recommend Melvins for the food! Minus 1 star for just average counter service, could be friendlier.

My wife and I found this restaurant on yelp and decided to go after a day spent walking around the Magnolia Plantation. We had not previously tried mustard based barbecue sauce. The wife was skeptical, but is now a convert. Speaking of being a convert, this restaurant is a little heavy on the Jesus. A version of the 10 commandments is on the cups. That was amusing; what is not is the constant Christian rock. This is the kind of place where you want to eat and leave ASAP or the music might become overpowering. Despite the painful music, the employees manage to efficiently and politely take and prepare orders. I don't know how they do it. I would require hearing protection. We each ordered the Carolina wet ribs. They were delicious. The wife liked the Mac and cheese and cole slaw sides. I had baked beans and onion rings, which had too much batter and were hard to eat, which trespass can be forgiven because this is some outstanding pig.

I am a fan of Melvin's. I am also a fan that they have a drive thru! (something fast that isn't fast food... yay) Anyways, the pulled pork is great. It already comes smothered in mustard sauce (fyi). I got the ribs once they were not very good. I like the coleslaw. Overall, it is a tasty place. They also do catering and they are closed on Sunday.

One of the best BBQ restaurants around. The chicken and brisket are delicious! We loved everything we have tried so far. The sides are good too. Cornbread is sweetly southern. Mac and cheese is rich and cheesy. (Doesn't taste like baked Stouffers as do many other restaurants.) There is also a condiment bar with pickled veggies and peppers and Melvin's sauces. They also have daily specials.

Melvin's defines southern cooking. I'm going to make a bold statement: Melvin's has the best BBQ in the world. Note, this applies to all of the Bessinger family restaurants (Bessinger's, Maurice's, Joe's) because they all use the same recipe. I have to review on behalf of Melvin though, because being a Mt Pleasant gal, this is my closest location. The Bessinger family's secret recipe is their sauce: the vinegar and mustard based delicacy. Fact: Sticky Fingers stole their recipe some years back but failed in replicating it. Always go with the BBQ sandwich because you cant go wrong here. Sides: mac & cheese and their green beans. and FRIES. ah i love their fries. they are large and always very salty. you also need to try at least one onion ring. also the PICKLE BAR! love being able to snack on pickles and peppers as I anxiously await my order. if you've left room, go for a milk shake.

Being a 'home Smoker', Q joints are held to a higher Standard. Pulled Pork was ok, could have had more Smoke flavor, really enjoyed the Carolina sauce the most but wish it wouldn't have been drenched in the Sauce. Brisket was fantastic....it was 5 Stars!!! Nice bark, juicy, top shelf. Onion Ring ( Yes, singular) was different for sure. Fries were excellent and Cole Slaw was good and reminiscent of The Colonel's.

Yummy!!! Had the chicken sandwich with the secret mustard sauce. It rocked. Collard greens were wonderful. hubby had the brisket and baked beans which were also delicious. We had a small dog that we brought with us and they let it sit on the patio. very friendly staff. Will definitely come back again before we leave town

Went to this place twice a few days ago and it was outstanding. The people are very friendly and seem be be very caring about their customers. I had the half chicken one day and the brisket the next. The brisket was the better choice in my opinion because of the moist, tender meat that it was. Not to mention the sweet tea and the BBQ sauces are off the charts. Be sure to go visit this place if you have the time to do so.

My wife and I are vegetarian, but, when our carnivore friends wanted to dine here, we joined them. We ordered their Veggie Plate which consisted of four choices off the non-meat menu. I had Fried Okra, French Fries, Side Salad, and Mac & Cheese. It was very adequate, and very large. I was surprised at how much food I got for $11.00. It really filled me up. The French Fries were good, and as expected. The Side Salad was very pedestrian, but good, too. I like Fried Okra because I can't get it at home. The Fried Okra here seemed a bit overcooked, and more "hard" than I expected. The Mac & Cheese was not very flavorful, and kind of disappointing. What I really liked about this place was the atmosphere, and the "Pickle Bar." They had all sorts of pickled treats that diners could help themselves to. There were pickled jalapenos, pickled banana peppers, a pickled salad, and, of course, pickles. It augmented the dining very nicely. I also liked the decorations around the place. The decorations add to the ambience and the experience. There is nothing I know of anywhere near where I live in Colorado.

Drove from North Charleston to Mount Pleasant, got in the drive thru and went up to the window to pay just to hear: No ribs. Which happened to be my order. Waste of gas, waste of time, and huge disappointment. Had I been told this when we rolled up to order then I would've been less disappointed. We usually come here for good ribs and a good time, but to go and have neither is definitely a turn off for future visits.

An old Charleston staple. They serve the best BBQ in Charleston and has for years. They have delicious food but as many other reviewers say their service is the problem. All it will take is another place to open with a comparable menu and a staff that cares to to put a hurting on Melvin's. Melvin's in Mt. Pleasant is like Lowe's in Mt. Pleasant, they know they don't have any competition so they don't care about service.

The flavors are all there for some very delicious southern bbq! I've been enjoying the food from this place for over a year now. Everything I've ordered has put a smile on my face. My only complaint is the price to food ratio. It's pretty expensive for pretty small meat portions.

After reading ALL the reviews for both listings for Melvin's on YELP; we decided to give it a try. I was apprehensive going in, but was pleasantly surprised. I chose the Chopped Pork platter with the 2 gigantic onion rings and collard greens. Hubby had the Big Joe with coleslaw and mac-n-cheese. I wasn't impressed with their two sauces, one mustard and one tomato based. While the sauces are currently mass produced, the recipe is old and family. The chopped pork was moist and tender and tasty without either sauce. I'm not a fan of sweet bread, especially when I thought it was cornbread. The collards were tender with a bit if crunch still, very nice. My only issue was there was no vinegar on the table for the greens. The onion rings were, I think someone called the dessert like, spectacularly crispy and yummy. Their coleslaw was tasty, not too sweet or runny. Was disappointed in their mac-n-cheese, it was incredibly dry. We will go back, and I'd even recommend them.

Melvin's is fast and delicious BBQ. Getting into the parking lot was a bit tricky, go against the arrows or you could get stuck in the drive-thru line for a while. Seating - IMO, there was plenty of seating. My wife, daughter, and I went on a weekend night and it was busy and had no problem getting a seat. Service - Having worked in the food industry for 8+ years, if you are going here expecting to be pampered, you need a reality check. It is basically a Panera-style order, sit, have your number called type of place. Food - They have legit good BBQ with a cool atmosphere and tasty homemade sauces. The pulled pork sandwich is GREAT. As for sides, the Mac n' Cheese and sweet potatoes were KILLER. Overall, good place if you want a quick, delicious sit-down dinner.

The brisket literally melts in your mouth with a nice kick of smoke. Pulled pork was very good as well. Loved the cornbread and baked beans too. But that brisket, wow! A definite stop if you're staying in the nearby hotels. Easy in and out, and quick.

Great BBQ and I love the mustard sauce. The Carolina cole slaw is great and the meat plates come in large portions. I would recommend the ribs with the mustard sauce. It's really cool place with its own drive through and has its own complimentary peppers bar when you sit in the "dining" room. Great for dine in and take out.

The BBQ here is so good it makes me want to cry. Seriously. Don't even get me started on the onion rings. I'm not a big onion ring person- not that I dislike them but I won't go out of my way to get onion rings. But oh my goodness, the onion rings here are AMAZING. It's like eating donuts with onions inside. I recommend everyone try at least one of their onion rings as soon as possible.

MY FAVORITE BARBEQUE PLACE IN CHARLESTON!! This Melvins was close to my work so if I didn't feel like cooking I could just swing by here. Everything on the menu is delicious!! The only issue I have come across at this location is that the drive thru is very slow and it takes a lot longer to get the food then the other Melvins. But overall I definitely recommend this place!

The sides were the best part of my meat and two plate. I loved their macaroni and cheese and cole slaw. My boyfriend had the hash and rice and a very fresh side salad. The meat however was a little underwhelming. The half chicken was half juicy and half dry. The dark meat was delicious but the breast meat was stringy and dry. The chopped pork had sauce already on it even though we asked for it on the side. I'm not a huge fan of the mustard based sauces. Cornbread was tasty. Portions are huge!!! If I was a local or had a fridge in my hotel, I would have saved the sides to go.

Days before we move out of Charleston and we've found the best BBQ around. Go figure. I've had this place bookmarked forever and finally got around to trying it. All I can say is Damn. Ribs are on point. Some of the best I've had in a restaurant. Nice and smokey, good texture(not super fall of the bone, they've got some pull to them which is how I like it). Sauce isn't my absolute favorite, but it compliments the spices on the meat perfectly. Pulled pork, holy cow. My wife is the expert here and she said it was some of the best she's ever had. I agreed. Stuff is straight up good. Sides are mediocre but not bad. Who cares though? If the meat is this good, that's all that really matters. Sweet tea is decent. Wish we found this place sooner. Pretty awesome.

Ordered 5 racks of ribs for the family. Was quoted $15 a rack. $25 a rack was the price that was published on the web site. When we got to the restaurant, we were told that both prices were wrong and that the price was $15 a pound. Now these are good ribs, but not that good. They would not honor the quoted price, and to make matters worse, they had a take it or leave it attitude and didn't even offer any sauce. We've been eating these ribs for 12 years. Never again. These people are not worth talking to. If I continue this review it would only be filled with profanity so I'll quit now.

Omg - ordered a 2 meat plate with brisket and pork --- holy hell!!! Could barely get through the cornbread and brisket - ended up having 2 full meals out of lunch!!! I totally understand why it's been around for EVER!!! The only reason we didn't go back was to try other places!!! I think they should sell the sauces that were on the table- maybe they do but the place was so packed I didn't go back to ask. Don't be fooled by the size of the building, there is more seating - 2 dining rooms inside and 2 outdoors, one covered. I generally hate Okra but their fried Okra ROCKS!!!

  • Patrick D.

My experience at melvins started out bad. The girl behind the register she was so unhelpful. The price for food was on the high side for lunch. I had the brisket I almost broke my plastic fork. Enough said. Just go to sticky fingers its right there and the staff are professional, not mean.

  • William A.

I was skeptical because this place looks like an Applebee's, but this is the best barbecue I've ever had in my entire life. I got the pulled pork and it seriously fucked me up. I was in a pork-related condition that made me feel like it was unsafe to drive. You have to try all the sauces, those sweet smoky mustards are unbeatable. I also asked for a golden onion ring because I did not know what that was. They have the 10 Commandments written on the back of every cup here, but I'm pretty sure this onion ring is some sort of crime against god. It is a DONUT. 10/10 would devour again, but seriously, they give you a donut with a ring of onion inside.

If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. The staff are friendly, the food is INCREDIBLE, the atmosphere is wonderful, and it has a drive-thru. The sauce is incredible no matter which option you choose. This place is worth a trip to Charleston from NY any day.

Next time I'm going to drive thru b/c the seating was limited at lunch. Walk up to the counter and order from the menu - very busy and lots of choices! Really good pulled pork sandwich with mustard sauce, get a side of coleslaw and pack it in there, too. The fries were super salty, you can see the salt crust on the steak fries. I want to say this was one of the best pulled pork sandwiches around. I just love pulled pork so I can't be trusted though. :) $10 for sandwich, side of coleslaw and a soda.

Great bbq and service. The ribs were moist and tender and the signature sauce just compliments the bbq ribs. Fries and onion were served hot and freshly cooked. Service is warm and friendly. Drive thru available. Restaurant is closed every Sunday.

Stay away!! Placed an ordinary takeout order 7 hours ahead. Get there and there's no record. I ask how long it would take and I'm told 5 minutes. In their terms that means a full hour. Also, they don't have the sides I ordered earlier available, or any other sauce choices. This is a bbq joint, how do you run out of sauce that's likely chock full of preservatives. Another guy walks in after me. He had to drive back (through an hour and a half of beach traffic) because they messed up his order - left off half of it.

I've eaten at several BBQ joints here in Charleston and I have to say that this is my new favorite. Atmosphere- very typical of a BBQ restaurant. Service- Didn't really stand out above the others, but no complaints. Food- This is where it stood out. I had the BBQ pork. It was very well done. It had a mustard sauce base. My friend had the BBQ brisket with a BBQ sauce base. I was able to sample his. I would have been satisfied with either. Everything was amazing. The onion rings were sinful- a sweet heavy batter covering each. There were only two because they were so large. We all had the basic combo, yet we nearly had to be carried out of the place. Overall- With a sea of BBQ places, this place managed to stand out among the pack. I highly recommend.

Charleston has a reputation for great food, but I have to say, so far the only place that has lived up to the hype is Melvin's. I love their hash, I've never found anything quite like it. Pulled pork was very good as always, as were the ribs. Initially, I ordered the pulled pork, but changed my mind after I made the order. The counter staff was great and switched it out for me, no problem, though they did tell me that the pork was better. They were right, but I'm glad to have had a lighter option. Still, it was great to have this consistently great place to visit in Charleston. Sometimes, we just get the itch, Gotta go to Melvin's. It's worth the 6 hour trip from Gainesville, FL.

The food was pretty good...I had the smoked wings, however I gave them 3 stars because the young lady (Shyderia) probably shouldn't be working the register because her customer service skills were lacking. If you are offering a Military discount and the customer notices after you ring it up, don't tell them it's too late to honor the discount when anyone with common sense knows it can be voided and redone. Thank you to the young lady from the kitchen who fixed the situation!

Delicious! Brisket was awesome, cornbread was straight out of the oven, coleslaw had good seasoning and the sauces were amazing. Pork had some small bones in it, which does sometimes happen but it was still delicious all the same, just had to be a bit careful eating it. Great BBQ when your on the go.

Do not drive thru! Service was slow and terrible... Paid 19.04 for a pulled pork plate with a drink. Did not get to go silverware or extra sauce as requested (and probably charged for). This meal was certainly not worth $20 or the wait it took to get it.... Won't be back anytime soon.

Minus 1 star for not enough seating indoors. Other than that, superb BBQ restaurant! A little different than the Texas style BBQ I'm accustomed to (I'm from Louisiana), but delicious nonetheless. I got the ribs and chicken combo platter (enough food for 3 people) with lima beans and slaw. Also sampled the fried okra, and it was very good. Kids loved the onion rings. The pork sandwiches also got high marks in our party. Cornbread was super sweet, which I don't personally care for, but those who like it that way said it was great. *Also kudos to this place for putting the 10 Commandments on their drink cups. Not so much from a religious standpoint (I'm not especially religious), but for having the courage to say what they believe, in this age where the PC police have everyone cowering in fear of offending some perpetually offended whiny jackass.

I had the Big Joe Combo pulled pork sandwich with a side of Mac & Cheese and an unsweet tea. They loaded the pork onto the bun and I love how it was already mixed with the mustard base sauce instead of drizzled on top... no muss, no fuss. The mac was cheesy in a stringy way and less of a creamy way but was also mouth watering. After reading other reviews I'm wishing I had one of the onion rings too. I would also suggest they start serving fried pickle spears as well, but that's is solely for selfish reasons. Great BBQ, great price, great people... I will be back!

I am truly in love. I can't believe I haven't written this review yet! I took my mama there today for lunch. It was her first time and she is very particular about her BBQ, especially being from NC. She ordered a burger and I got the Big Joe. When ordering I saw what looked like Brunswick stew and the sweetest young girl said "oh no. That's our hash and rice. Would you like to add it to your order?" My mom responded saying she wasn't a hash fan. When we paid, the smiling girl asked us to please wait. She returned with an order of hash and told my mom that she should try theirs and decide if she still wasn't a fan. Well let me say..... She is a fan. She has tried hash and rice before without success. Before we made it to the door with our takeout, my mom leaned over and said she will come eat at Melvins "a lot more", just because of the customer service. The food was awesome. I think we have a winner!

You won't leave hungry or unhappy from Melvin's! The mustard based BBQ is excellent and don't forget to try the ribs. I also had the mac and cheese ---- leave room for that. There is no table service - you order at the front and find a table. Good value and great food.

Best onion rings in town. Melvin's is an institution. Been eating here since I was 10 years old. The BBQ, brisket, pulled chicken, ribs, and the burgers are all great. The baked beans are awesome and I love the steak fries with a side of honey mustard. Thank goodness I live around the corner.

So far, I've eaten at Melvin's twice. On four occasions, they were out of brisket, as early as 7:30, which is pretty ridiculous. How do run out of brisket? I finally got brisket tonight. It was good, though I think a little pricey for the portion size. Their pork is OK, but I wasn't wowed. It came with the yellow sauce, though so little of it that was hard to decide if it was good or not. The onion rings are massive, but they're mostly thick, cakey batter, which gets old part way into the second one. Their fries are good, though some of them were way too salty. The mac & cheese is bland. The cornbread was good, but not great. I'll probably take Melvin's over a chain restaurant, but I wouldn't call them great. Having lived in three southern states, I've had great bbq, and this ain't it.

Must try this BBQ! I've only been here once but it was so good. The girl taking my order said the "Big Joe" was the most popular so I ordered the Big Joe Basket. I got 6oz of BBQ with their special sauce, steak fries, and one big onion ring. I will be going there more and trying a lot of other meals on their menu. The only thing I didn't like was the seating. When I went it was raining so everyone was sitting inside and it was hard to try and find a seat for just me.

We were deep in the South and just had to get some BBQ. After checking out decent enough reviews we stopped in. I ordered the half rack with mac and cheese and fries. The young lady at the counter automatically assumed I wanted the "golden sauce" and didn't ask which I wanted. But I asked...and she said that's what they are known for, so I went with it. When I got to the table I tried both sauces - Golden and Red. I hated the Golden one and quickly asked her if I could change my order - which they did. Had I not done that I would of had a TOTALLY different review. Perhaps letting people sample both sauce options before placing an order - if they are new - would be a good idea? So ribs were good! The red sauce is what I am used to for BBQ was very tasty. The ribs aren't fall off the bone but they were meaty and good. The Mac & Cheese was good. Not really creamy which I liked. The fries were good too. The wife had a pulled pork sandwich which she raved about - so I took a bite. It was great! I washed it down with a sweet iced tea. Good eats.

I ordered the brisket platter and it was very good. The portion sizes are very generous. They folks at Melvin's are not afraid to feed you. You really get your moneys worth. The meal comes with your choice of two sides and I chose the baked beans and cole slaw. The beans were delicious and the cole slaw was finely chopped which I tend to like. The banana pudding for desert is a large portion of pudding but it was very good. I wish there had been a little less whipped cream but that was because I was so full from the dinner. The only reason i gave them 4 stars and not 5 stars is because service was quite slow. It took 15 minutes to get our order and that was excessive we thought. I will definitely go back because the food was excellent.

The best barbecue in Charleston! Melvin's is one of several restaurants run by various members of the Bessinger family. In the Charleston area, Melvin's is by far the best BBQ in town even when one takes into consideration the other Bessinger family restaurants. I must be honest I'm not a fan of the sides here. The mac and cheese, fried okra, and onion rings are good, but the rest of the sides fail to impress. If you want to take home the bbq and add your own sides, I can promise you'll be in seventh heaven. Their sweet tea is a must for everyone visiting Charleston and the hamburgers are phenomenal! In 1999 Chef Emeril Lagasse named their cheeseburger America's best cheeseburger and he was on target. Great place for takeout or for quick eat in lunch/dinner. Again, if you're looking for true Carolina BBQ this is the place to go!

I really liked the SC style (mustard-based) BBQ pulled pork sandwich and steak fries. It was plenty enough to eat for the money. The disppointment was the cheeseburger. I read in my research that Emeril Lagasse named it one of the best burgers in America. I'm a burger fiend and this one fell WAY short. Stick to the BBQ.

We were told it was the best barbeque in town and wouldn't disagee. Informal setting where you order after standing in "the que" and pick up your food. Excellent ribs and pulled pork with generous portions. Huge sides with great choices.

Being from chicago i must say i was impressed. It feels like a fast food place but it has the best darn pulled pork i have ever had. The Mac and Cheese was too cheesy for me but thats prob a southern thing

Last week I went to Momma Brown's, and thought it was good. Boy, was I wrong, Melvin's puts Momma Brown's to shame. Everything has that awesome, authentic smoke. The ribs have the right amount of sauce and a huge slab of meat. And you can never go wrong with a donut-style onion ring.

Pricey and pretty mediocre in my opinion. No one in our party was very impressed. It really didn't measure up to my favorite North Carolina BBQ joints.

Good Bar-B-Q for sure, but too much sugar in the sauce, slaw, beans, corn bread, and onion rings. Perfect atmosphere for Bar-B-Q. Self service so no tips. Convenient location. I'll go again next time I'm in town

Delicious ribs! A hometown kind of feel. Overall we agreed, great mac and cheese, good green beans and milk shakes are delicious. We were in Charleston on vacation for a week and went to Melvin's twice! The ribs were by far my favorite. Emeril and other restaurant critics were riht when they called this place one of the best! I will head back there next time I am in Charleston.

Oh, Melvin's is SOOO good. I ran into a BBQ guy up in Seattle (where I live), and even he knew about it. I went there on a whim, because my cat is named Melvin. But it was the best BBQ I've ever eaten. PROS: Fantastic BBQ. CONS: It's thousands of miles away from me. My cat is lazy.

Melvins has it right, the sauce is excellent (The Mustard Based kind--Do not use the Tomato based, that is for Peeps who just don't get it). TO those who say the sauce came off a grocery store shelf, well that is because Melvin sells it at every store, it is the best. The BBQ (WHich refers to what some call Pulled Pork) is awesome, I love the hash, The Fries and the Onion Rings (And I am allergic to onions so or me to risk that tells you something) It is not really a chain, two locations only. I used to live in the area, and the first place I go is Melvins when the plane lands

You've got to go to Melvins. Great barbecue in the state that truly knows what that means. Whether it's the big or little Joe, it doesn't matter, this place is great. I'd send some sauce to friends but it wouldn't be the same without the pork pulled just the right way.
